Domaine Besson, Chablis

Grand Vins du Chablis

besson

Domaine Besson is an independent, family owned winery in Chablis. In 1902, Eugène Besson planted 7.58 hectares on vines in Chablis. His grandson, Alain, now owns the Domaine and he has expanded the holdings to 21 hectares.

In the early 2000's, Alain built an enlarged, modern over-ground cellar on his property on the southern outskirts of the village of Chablis next to the Premier Cru vineyard “Vaillons” Alain’s daughter, Camille, has now taken over winemaking duties.

Alain started producing his own estate wine in 2000. Clive Coates describes his wine as "…splendidly pure and minerally… (and) … the quality is usually impressive."

The vines have an average age of 40 years. The vineyards are cultivated with great care and a minimum of sprays and fertilizer are used. The wine is made in temperature-controlled vats and aged in stainless steel.

The Besson style of Chablis demonstrates minerality and acidity but the wines are more open than many others from this appellation. The intense fruit flavour is balanced by the acidity and the wines are easy to drink after only a short time in bottle.
